Carlos Alanis-Avila, AKA varflimz, is a filmmaker and photographer whose work captures the emotional undercurrents of everyday life and the fleeting moments that often go unnoticed. With a background in film and journalism, Carlos blends cinematic composition with documentary-style authenticity in his photography.

His images frequently explore themes of identity, memory, and human connection, using natural light, color, and symbolism to evoke a deeper emotional response. Whether behind the camera for stills or motion, he is driven by his roots and a desire to tell meaningful stories that resonate across media.

A junior film and television major with a journalism and photojournalism minor. He joined the Chronicle as a photojournalist in May 2025. He is expected to graduate in May 2027.
